Cortical cartography: what's in a map?

چکیده

It has been known for over a century that sensory and motor areas in the mammalian cerebral cortex contain maps whose topography mirrors the physical arrangement in the body of the sensory inputs or the motor outputs. For example somatosensory cortex contains a map of the body surface (Figure 1a), motor cortex contains a map of the body musculature, visual cortex contains a topographically ordered map of visual space and auditory cortex contains a map of sound frequency (Figure 1b). Sensory receptors are concentrated in body regions where sensation is more acute, for example in the lips, tips of the fingers, and central foveal region of the eye, and the corresponding regions in the brain maps are enlarged, roughly in proportion to the density of receptors. In addition to being distorted in ways that reflect the functional importance of different body regions, cortical maps are plastic and can adapt to experience, especially if it occurs early in life. For example, the area of cortex devoted to inputs from the fingers appears to be unusually large in violinists who have begun their training before the age of 11 years, whereas amputation of a limb or digit can lead to a shrinkage of the cortical area devoted to the missing sensory inputs. Map organisation also varies not just within species but between them, in ways which reflect the varying importance of different sensory modalities and submodalities to the species concerned.

The Cortical Localization of Language and the “Birth” of the Cognitive Neurosciences

█ Abstract Whereas at the beginning of the XIXth century, Gall’s description of “heads” received little scientific attention, by the end of the century, the cortical maps produced by the “cerebral cartography” of Ferrier were considered a true reproduction of the actual positions of the cortical functions. Gall conceived the brain as a mass of “organs”, each constituting a specific instrument o...

Foreshadowing Contemporary Digital Cartography A Historical Review of Cinematic Maps in Films

Through an historical review of cinematic maps – or “cinemaps” – this paper argues that contemporary digital cartography was conceptualized in films. This argument is first developed through a discussion of the emergence of animated maps in docudramas of the 1910s. These early cinemaps were followed by more sophisticated examples that foreshadowed the structure and design principles of “modern”...

Literary Mapping in German-Speaking Europe

Early modern maps were surrounded by and interspersed with texts of many kinds. The intimate relationship between cartographic image and geographical text in the map was due to the map’s mixed media structure and its early appearance in the context of history books, travel reports, or chorographic descriptions. Literature was based on other types of text. Epic, drama, and poetry were essentiall...

Design and Implementation of a Web Interactive Thematic Cartography Method Based on a Web Service Chain

There is a tendency toward the creation of thematic maps on the web in the ongoing development of cartographic technology. However, automatically creating maps through the web and creating interactive web maps are two challenges associated with this field. To solve these problems, a web thematic cartography method based on a web service chain is presented here. Automated cartography is performe...
